Dear readers,
This week I'd like to tell you about the differences in skin color. It's important to understand your skin so it gets all the attention it needs.
Did you know that The SkinLab Limburg specializes in dark, tinted and light skin?
Melanin
Your skin color is determined by the amount of melanin present in your skin. Melanin is a pigment produced by cells (melanocytes). These cells are located in the epidermis. The amount of melanin is determined by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including sunlight exposure.
Dark, tanned, and light skin therefore differ in the amount of melanin present. Dark skin contains more melanin than tanned and light skin.
Myth: People with dark skin don't need to wear sunscreen.
This isn't true! While melanin protects against the harmful effects of the sun, this doesn't mean people with darker skin can't burn and develop skin cancer. Yes, the risk is lower with higher melanin levels. However, this doesn't eliminate all risks. So, use SPF daily to reduce these risks.
SPF protects against the harmful effects of UV radiation such as sunburn, sun damage and skin cancer.
Fact: A standard treatment does not work for every skin
Dark and tinted skin is more susceptible to pigment formation. Incorrect product use can cause dark spots on the skin because the pigment cells are more active in dark and tinted skin.
Common skin problems for dark and tanned skin types include age spots, vitamin D deficiency, and an increased risk of scarring. These can cause the skin to appear dull and uneven. Dark and tanned skin also has a higher risk of inflammation, extremely low moisture levels, and flaking.
