You'd think that once you've built your skincare routine, you're all set. Well, not necessarily. Every season is different, and winter, in particular, can be a bit tougher on your skin than other seasons. That's why it can be crucial to adjust your routine.
In the Netherlands, we experience lower humidity during the winter. This means our skin retains moisture less effectively and dries out more quickly. As you probably know, this causes fine lines, something most of us prefer to avoid. Even brief exposure can dry out your skin. The drier your skin is, the more it's affected, which can lead to irritation or even breakouts.
What can you do for your skin in winter?
Even though winter is a harsh season, it's best to avoid aggressive skincare. No heavy scrubs or anything like that. In winter, a moisturizer is often enough. Yes, your routine just got easier! It's all about hydration. Exfoliating occasionally is certainly fine, but choose gentle products; your skin already has to endure enough outside.
There are even several studies that suggest it's best not to use moisturizer in freezing weather. Why? This increases the risk of frostbite, which will dry out your skin even more. So, moisturize primarily when you're staying home during freezing weather or in the evening before bed.
